The roots of La Fontelina trace back more than two millennia, when the ships that supplied the opulent villas of the second Roman emperor Tiberius Iulius Caesar Augustus anchored here. In the 16th century, the women of Capri came here to soak flax leaves in these natural pools to manufacture threads for fishing nets and clothing. These white rocks, which were called "E font d'o lino" later became known as "Fontelina" and are a testament to centuries of hard work and tradition.
In 1949, the restaurant La Fontelina officially opened its doors in a modest wooden hut right on the cliffs. Over the years, the beach club had to be rebuilt several times to survive all those violent sea storms. The 1960s marked a turning point when the international jet set, including celebrities such as Brigitte Bardot, Sophia Loren or Jackie Kennedy, discovered the allure of Capri and in particular the charm of La Fontelina. The terrace, which is shaded by a pergola made of chestnut wood, and their iconic white and blue sun loungers have meanwhile achieved a cult status around the world.
Since 1949, the essence of La Fontelina has remained untouched. Its timeless atmosphere has been shaped by generations of people who have experienced their happiest moments on these cliffs. Artwork 049 / 050 immortalizes this heritage and invites the viewer to indulge in sun-drenched memories of La Fontelina on the enchanting coast of Capri.
